Where we are now

This week I was reading a great post over at Down to Earth about how to start your simple life. Rhonda writes:

You can start anywhere – by writing up a budget, menu planning, thinking about how you shop, creating a vegetable garden, buying chooks, making soap, organising your kitchen to better suit how you work, installing solar panels or water tanks/barrels. It could be anything.

I really needed this! Despite the fact that we have at least a general plan, I sometimes feel that we aren’t making any progress toward our goal of moving internationally. But this post reminded me that anything we can do now is a step in the right direction. And it made me think about what I’m already doing to get us ready for a move. In general, we are learning about simplifying life, saving money, and the expat life (gosh, that sounds familiar! I wonder where I’ve heard it before?!). But I wanted to think about specifics. In what ways are we learning about these things?

In terms of simplifying life, we are working on learning to make things for ourselves when we can, getting rid of things we don’t need, and finding enjoyment in simple things, like this day in the bluebonnets.

But that post nudged me a little to think about progress. Where are we in our plan to make a run for the border? As a result, I came up with these 10 different ways we are already simplifying life and saving money:

1) Making homemade laundry detergent
2) Making my own deodorant
3) Experimenting with essential oil bug spray
4) Learning a bit about gardening
5) Riding a scooter to save money on gas
6) Cooking from scratch and in bulk
7) Using what I have on hand
8) Planning menus so that we are not wasting food
9) Decluttering what we can whenever possible
10) Using Craigslist, Freecycle, and local garage sales for gently-used items

I needed to think about these things objectively. Despite the fact that we are still here, we really are learning more about saving money and the simply life!

  1. Sounds like you are doing a great job of heading in the right direction.
There is something nice about simplifying life. I love the that I am seeing more and more people in this fast paced tech driven world saying enough and taking a step back.

    • We really feel the need to simplify and not run the rat race – both P-Daddy and I just really want to ENJOY where we are, who we are with, and what we are doing!

  2. Something about this post struck a cord with me. This is what I am trying to do, simplify my life, and life a more natural, more organic life.

  3. Wow. This is so inspiring to me to simplify. I just checked out a book from the library about simplifying life. I allow our culture and circumstances to distract me from my goals to focus on the important things in life.
